GDPR breach: it could happen to you

Monday 10 September 2018

Last week, British Airways became embroiled in a GDPR nightmare, which saw 380,000 customers have their financial details stolen.

Described by BA’s boss, Alex Cruz as “a very sophisticated, malicious attack”, the breach compromised personal and financial details of customers who had made or changed bookings using BA's website and app.

But how was this possible? Whilst BA has not revealed any technical details about the breach, cyber-security experts have some suggestions of possible methods used. One is that hackers compromised a flaw in the software on British Airways’ website. Another suggests it could have been an inside job.

Now you're probably wondering what this has to do with you. Well given the goldmine of personal data held by those working in the sales and lettings industry (such as identity documents, personal details and bank information), agents are an easy target, and a failure within the sector is more a matter of 'when' and not 'if'.

And whilst a good number of businesses are endeavouring to do the right thing, there are plenty who are yet to address their data protection responsibilities, which is a high risk strategy. The Regulator has been clear; they want to work with organisations who act responsibly, not penalise them punitively. But for those who simply ignore the new regime and fail to meet their data protection responsibilities, the penalties could be severe.
