NEW AUCTION HOUSE RECORD
Colin Young FNAVA

Regency Breakfast Cabinet

Auctioneer Colin Young was
delighted to create a new
auction house record for a
piece of antique furniture
on 10th August 2005.

Instructed to clear and sell
the contents of a
mid-terrace Stamford town
house, a Regency sideboard
of the highest quality and
stunning Classicism design
was the choice piece.
It was bought by the
vendor's mother during the
war years for £26-5s-0d. in
1942. It had been in the
house ever since.

The mixture of quality and
Fresh-to-the-Market appeal
was the recipe for success.
After asking for £30,000 to
open the bidding and then
decreasing amounts, a lady
bidding for an American
client started the bidding
at£5,000.
Going in £2/3,000 increments
it was bid in the room by a
dealer against the lady. |
|
When it reached £35,000 with
the lady, that old chestnut
occurred - the dealer
shouting out a bid of
£34,000, so with cards
stacked in the auctioneer's
favour the request was
accepted with a smile (Hmmm.
does he think I was born
yesterday?). The second
layer of room dealer bidding
petered out at around the
£80,000 mark, when the
telephones came into play.

The lady dropped out at
£120,000, but with
encouragement for helping
with the first bid she
rejoined at £122, 128 &
132,000.
The successful bid was
£135,000 paid by a London
dealer.
Colin did think afterwards
he should have asked for a
bid of £134,000 in the room
for fun?

Golding Young have sold lots
in the £10's of thousand but
the record this lot beat was
41 years old.

In 1964 they sold a
Chippendale bookcase for
£1,700. In 1965 Colin's
parents bought their house
for £500!
A pleased vendor, a pleased
buyer and another NAVA
professional service
delivered.
